CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

The pilotless transport shuttle flew toward the ACN Challenger Class Destroyer, Ascendant. The shuttle was remotely piloted by the Salvation’s computing core, and Maelyn watched its perfect approach vector through the main holoscreen. She’d worked tirelessly to qualify not only to command a destroyer class warship, but to also lead a battle group. Since she was now able to utilize her implants, she’d used the rapid learning simulations available on the Salvation. Without accelerated learning programs, Quinton wouldn’t have been able to crew anywhere near as many ships as he had. Guided training simulations had given her a solid foundation, and she had a lifetime of experience aboard various ships. Her aptitude tests revealed that she was best suited to command destroyer class ships or below. Maelyn wasn’t the least bit surprised by this, as she’d never wanted to fly behemoth-sized ships, and she never wanted to command the Salvation. She was best suited for a smaller, precision strike force, and the Salvation’s aptitude tests had reinforced that. Her implants with VI assistants helped the rapid learning training simulations become committed to the memory centers of her brain. She’d underestimated just how well those simulations could impart knowledge. Over the weeks, she’d amassed years’ worth of experience in ship and fleet tactics. And the training wasn’t a download of someone else’s experience. Through her implants, the Salvation’s computing core analyzed her brain and experiences, then adapted the training scenarios that could quickly be integrated. They weren’t actual memories being inserted into her brain, but they were the suggestions of them, which allowed the brain to accept or reject those suggestions. Over time, with continued use of her implants, the training VI had been able to better match training simulations with her particular learning style.

As the shuttle flew toward the Ascendant, she got to see her ship for the first time. There were thousands of shuttles leaving the Salvation, taking passengers to their ships. As captain of the Ascendant, she wore the ACN black and gold uniform. Truth be told, Maelyn was in awe of what Admiral Browning had accomplished. She wished she could have seen the core worlds of the Acheron Confederacy before the Federation Wars. They’d been capable of so much, and even though they were gone, they’d left the spacers a way to free themselves from what had been unleashed on the galaxy.

The aircraft landed on the access hatch midships, and a section of the shuttle’s floor pulled away, revealing a small airlock. She climbed down the ladder onto her ship.

A female CDA in the same uniform gave her a crisp salute. “Welcome aboard the Ascendant, Captain Wayborn. Lieutenant Commander Sienna Hyden, ma’am.”

As the PMC mentioned her name, her service record appeared on Maelyn's internal HUD. She quickly read it and frowned. Maelyn returned the salute and began walking toward the bridge.

“I didn’t have a chance to review the service records of the crew before I came aboard.”

Artificial green eyes regarded her for a moment and then blinked.
